Zimbabwe police bust fake document ring

Selection of passportsPolice in Zimbabwe have made four arrests after finding materials for making fake passports and voter registration forms.

An immigration officer was among those arrested with fake security date stamps and blank copies of various registration documents. The gang had capacity to produce 150 counterfeit voter registration forms, Zimbabwe government-owned newspaper The Herald reports.

Police came across the fake document ring while investigating two South Africans living in Zimbabwe. Fake residence permits possesed by the two men linked them to the counterfeit document gang.

As well as blank voter registration cards, the police reportedly seized a serial number printer, blank birth and marriage certificates, and fake date stamps for a variety of government offices.

Zimbabwe police now have four men in custody - including two who have worked in immigration - but are still looking to make more arrests. The head of a local security company linked to the case by police is reportedly on the run.
