Mylan certified for supply chain security

Generic drugmaker Mylan has said that its distribution facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, has been endorsed by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) as meeting the expected standard of security in guarding against the threat of counterfeit drugs entering the supply chain.

The facility has been accredited under the NABP's Verified-Accredited Wholesale Distributors (VAWD) scheme, which was set up in 2004 and aims to provide assurance that wholesale distribution facilities operate legitimately, are validly licensed in good standing, and are employing security and best practices for safely distributing prescription drugs from manufacturers to pharmacies and other institutions.

Applicants for accreditation undergo an exhaustive criteria compliance review, licensure verification, a survey, background checks and screening through the NABP Clearinghouse.

Mylan notes that according to IMS Health data, one out of every 12 prescriptions dispensed in the US - branded or generic - is a Mylan product, and most of these are distributed by the company's Greensboro facility.
