Magnetic authentication system for adhesive labels

Schreiner FluxSecureA covert authentication technology based on magnetic threads which can be incorporated within self-adhesive labels has been launched onto the market by German firm Schreiner ProSecure.

The FluxSecure technology, which can also be applied in other areas such as folding carton boxes and blister packs, consists of an ultra-thin thread consisting of a metal alloy surrounded by a glass coating which has a characteristic magnetic field. The field can be read using a handheld reader or sensor - customised to the brand owner's own configuration - in order to verify the product's authenticity.

As the thread is thinner than a human hair and in this application is inserted between the adhesive and masking paper of the label its presence is hard to detect and does not interfere with the design of the printed label. The magnetic properties can be adjusted by varying the alloy as well as the thickness and length of the FluxSecure thread, and the alloy mixtures can be custom-made and are not reproducible, according to Schreiner.

"The FluxSecure feature can be quickly checked even through product enclosures and packaging," said Schreiner in a press release. "The magnetic properties of the security feature are read out without line of sight [and] this allows products to be verified even through heavy and metallic packaging."

Customised sensors are available for integration into machines, equipment or products or for stationary reading systems, according to Schreiner.
