Four arrests in UK over fake basmati rice

An operation by the National Food Crime Unit (NFCU) into the distribution and sale of basmati rice in counterfeit packaging has resulted in four arrests.

Large quantities of 10kg and 20kg bags of mixed rice in counterfeit premium brand basmati packaging were seized as part of the operation by the NFCU, which operates as part of the Food Standards Agency (FSA). However, there isn't thought to be any health risk to the public.

"The deliberate misrepresentation of legally imported bags of mixed rice as premium basmati products defrauds consumers and creates unfair competition for legitimate businesses," said NFCU deputy head Neil Castle.

"The arrests send a clear message that we will pursue those who seek to profit from deceiving consumers," he added. "Our teams will continue to work with partners to identify, investigate and disrupt these criminal networks, ensuring food is what it says it is."

The arrests date back to July, when an operation in Leicester resulted in the apprehension of a 48-year-old man, along with three London men – two from Croydon and one from Epsom. The men were held on suspicion of fraud by misrepresentation and conspiracy to defraud, but have since been released under investigation. Another man from London also attended a police station for a voluntary interview.
