Must-read memoirs: Akunyili's war against counterfeits
Phil Taylor, 29-Oct-2010
All of us at SecuringPharma.com are excited to hear that Dora Akunyili, the former director-general of Nigeria's medicines regulatory authority, has published a book describing her own experiences in fighting the counterfeit medicines trade.
Entitled The War Against Counterfeit Medicine: My Story, Akunyili's 442-page book covers her eight-year period as director of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), notably the circumstances surrounding an attempt on her life by an aggrieved counterfeit kingpin, and the strategies she employed to fight corruption and tribalism in government.
It also examines Akunyili's earlier life and the motivations that drove her to reinvent the NAFDAC as an effective weapon against counterfeit medicines, harmful cosmetics and substandard food, including her own sister Vivien's death as a result of administering fake insulin to manage her diabetes.
SecuringPharma.com is trying to identify contact details for ordering a copy of the book and will post the information as soon as possible.
