Hong Kong Customs arrest two in fake cosmetics op

An operation by Hong Kong Customs has resulted in the seizure of counterfeit perfumes and skincare products and the arrest of two people suspected of selling them through online channels.

The two-day crackdown – carried out on May 28 and June 5 – netted 7,000 fake items with an estimated value of around HK$300,000 (around $38,000), according to a statement issued by the agency. Two women aged 43 and 31 were detained in connection with the operation after searches at residences in Mei Foo and Kwun Tong.

"Customs earlier received information from the public and a trademark owner alleging that counterfeit skincare products were put on sale through online platforms," said Hong Kong Customs.

"Customs officers then made use of a big-data analytics system to conduct risk assessments and analyses, and through cyber patrols, discovered that another account on an online platform was also selling suspected counterfeit perfumes and skincare products."

The investigation is ongoing, and while the arrested persons have been released on bail pending further investigation, further arrests are not being ruled out. Meanwhile, investigators are looking into the source of the goods involved in the cases, and samples are being sent for safety testing.

If found to be hazardous, the penalties for those found guilty of trading in counterfeit goods rise sharply. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of HK$500,000 and imprisonment for five years.
