eNom adopts tougher stance against rogue online pharmacies

keyboard numbersDomain name wholesaler eNom has enlisted the aid of Internet pharmacy monitoring service LegitScript to try to identify customers operating rogue online pharmacies in violation of US state or federal law.

Under the agreement, LegitScript will provide eNom with a list of domain names that knowingly host illegal online pharmacies, so that eNom will be able to take action against them.

Earlier this month, President Obama called a meeting with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and domain name registrars to try to encourage them to take a greater role in curbing the activities of online pharmacies who offer medicines illegally without a prescription.

Interestingly, eNom was one registrar cited by LegitScript in a recent report for failing to suspend domain names when advised they were being used for illegal purposes. The latest announcement suggests the company will take a more robust stance on rogue online pharmacies in future.

“As the largest domain name wholesaler, we take our role and responsibility very seriously," said eNom's  senior vice president and general manager Taryn Naidu.

"As such, it is our policy to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, and where we have evidence of illegal conduct from law enforcement or another trusted source, we take appropriate action, including terminating domain name registration services," he added.
