In brief: France adopts 2D codes for drugs

2D datamatrix plus stopwatchAs of July 1, the traditional linear bar code on medicine packs in France will be replaced by a 2D datamatrix code.

Packs still carrying the old bar code (vignette) already in the supply chain can still be sold and dispensed after July 1 while circulating stocks are depleted.

The adoption of the new format will allow the medicine packs to carry more data, which in turn will help in product identification, pricing and reimbursement management as well as the traceability of drugs in the supply chain, according to France's Comité Economique des Produits de Santé (CEPS).

In tandem with the adoption of the new datamatrix code, CEPS will also set up a national database - updated daily - that will carry the information on each reimbursable drug as well as standardised patient information.

"The removal of the vignette, first proposed in 1999, will modernise, secure and streamline distribution channels and reimbursement of medicines," said CEPS in a statement. More information (in French) is available here.
